What is an ideal gulf coast florida town to live in

What is an ideal gulf coast florida town to live in.?
We are getting tired of the long cold winters and would like to live in Florida half the year. We are in our early 50's my husband is a builder and we are very athletic we would like a place with bike paths, fishing/boating,long beaches for walking, and affordable. We have heard prices have come down in Florida so we are looking for a real deal! We shall be working and playing while living part time in Fl.

I wouldn't live on the coast if I were you. Hurricanes are EXTREMELY nasty here, and the coast always gets hit hardest. We drove by the beach after a couple hurricanes and saw houses, trees all over the beach. Also, realize Florida is a great, beautiful place to live, but we have loads of lightning, tornadoes and Hurricanes. I would recommend something closer inland, and there are a couple great rivers to go on. We go down on the St. Johns River and there is a manatee park you are able to pull up to in your boat for free (Blue Springs National Park) and explore around the park. There are trails all over Florida, so don't worry about that. They are great for biking and walking on. Beaches, I would recommend Cocoa beach as a very clean, peaceful, though a bit touristy beach to go on. In Florida, no matter where you are, you're only like 60 miles away from a beach. Some beaches are Shark Capitols, so I would avoid those. Summers tend to be unbearably hot, so a pool would be a good investment, or get a house with a pool. Summers are known to get up to about 103 degrees on average. I actually live in the Lake Mary, Florida area and it's a great place to live. There isn't a lot of crime, it's very safe and friendly. We've never had a problem with living here. It has great, A plus schools, good neighborhoods.

House and condos are very cheap in Cape Coral, fl. right now. condos at $20K and houses not much more, especially if your husband's able to do repairs. Close to beaches, sanibel, captiva, and Ft Myers, all for just a little money! You can ride on the roads in Cape Coral. We lived in Ft Myers and dau. in Cape Coral some time ago, but we are looking to move back, at least for part of the year. Pool will help if there in the summer, but you do get used to the heat.
