is it better to water the lawn and the outside plants b4 a freeze? Or not at all. I heard it keeps the roots from freezing. We live in Florida where it rarely freezes but I didn't want to lose any of our plants. Thanks

it doesnt matter

In the North, our lawn and plants endure freezing temps all winter without any consequences. Fragile plants shoud be moved indoors.

Yes, watering your lawn and outdoor plants will keep the freeze from reaching the roots and killing the plants. I'd water after the sun goes down to avoid evaporation.

If you have the time you should cover any young or expensive shrub when the over night temp drops below 40 degrees. As far as watering..... the best thing to do is to let your st. aug grow a little longer in the winter, this will protect the roots more than trying to decide to water before or after a freeze. Make sure you put down some Potash to help strenthen the roots. Your grass should be kept at around 4"-4 1/2" inches during the colder season and 3 1/2"-4" during the summer.

it depends on the plant. a layer of ice will kill many broadleafed tropicals. plants like crown of thorns you can freeze in ice. your best bet is to cover them in blankets and sheets like all your neighbors. not plastic dropcloths unless you don't mind losing the top layer of green.
